Reasons Not To Use Analog Phone Recorders

Most people who love technology recommend digital phone recorders, and many would advise very strongly against analog, or audiocassette, recorders. While the audiocassette was the hottest thing a few decades ago, cassettes are really not very good technology compared to the digital recorder. Here are a few reasons you should get digital, not an analog, phone recorders.

Cassettes may become obsolete. They may not, of course. But audiocassettes are becoming harder to find, and the price of cassettes is higher, in some stores, than it was a few years ago. As long as businesses use cassette recorders, office supply stores will continue to stock both standard and microcassettes, but keep in mind that you may have more trouble finding the cassettes you need than you did only a short time ago. If you're buying a recorder you hope to use for seven, eight or more years, you will probably be happier with digital. There is no guarantee on any type of data storage, of course, but it is very likely that you can access files from a digital recorder long into the future.
Cassettes are lousy storage. You may not be familiar with the word "lousy," but it refers to the fact that cassettes actually lose a little quality and data each time they're played. Digital files only change if they're opened, changed and resaved. Simply listening to a digital file doesn't degrade the file. Also, if you want to copy audiocassettes, you need to carefully preserve the master, and you can only record from the master. Copies of copies will not sound as good as the original. With a digital file, however, you can copy it as many times as you need. This is a good reason for looking at telephone recorders is simply that you have to make a copy and keep the master safe, if you plan on needing to listen to the tape a lot. And if you record over the tape several times, it starts to get worn out.
Cassettes are noisy. Literally, cassettes make a little bit of a hissing and sometimes a clicking sound that will always be audible on the recording. If you're buying a new recorder, definitely consider digital phone recorders, which have much better sound quality. You will find that you can hear the voices better. And once you don't have the hiss and click, you'll be surprised to find out how much it bothered you.

Digital models are simply better, in many ways, than analog or audiocassette recorders. That's why they're so popular. It's not just the cool factor, although digital is cooler than analog. It's the fact that digital recorders offer so many features, and so much better quality and reliability. Buying cassette phone recorders only makes sense these days if you're somehow locked into analog because of legacy systems in your office—and even then it might be better to switch the whole office to digital.
